چکیده

Agriculture has supported human life from the beginning of civilization, despite a plethora biotic (pests, pathogens) and abiotic (drought, cold) stressors being exerted on global food demand. In past 50 years, enhanced understanding cellular molecular mechanisms in plants led to novel innovations biotechnology, resulting introduction desired genes/traits through plant genetic engineering. Targeted genome editing technologies such as Zinc-Finger Nucleases (ZFNs), Transcription Activator-Like Effector (TALENs), Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) have emerged powerful tools for crop improvement. This new CRISPR technology is proving be an efficient straightforward process with low cost. It possesses applicability across most species, targets multiple genes, used engineer metabolic pathways create resistance pathogens stressors. These (GE) are poised meet UN’s sustainable development goals “zero hunger” “good health wellbeing.” could more developing transgenic crops aid speeding up regulatory approvals risk assessments conducted by US Departments (USDA), Food Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

India's Quest towards Food Security

India is home to one-sixth of the global population. When India became independent in 1947, the country was not self-sufficient in food production and did not have an appropriate food distribution system. There were pockets in the country which faced threat of famine and starvation whenever monsoon failed or staple production was low. Over three fourth of the population was poor, food insecure ...

Arable crop disease control, climate change and food security

Global food security is threatened by crop diseases that account for average yield losses of 16%. Climate change is exacerbating threats to food security in much of the world, emphasising the need to increase food production in northern European countries such as the UK. However, to mitigate climate change, crops must be grown so as to minimise greenhouse gas emissions (GHG); results with UK oi...
